Herriot Country
Just a few miles from the Thirsk visitor centre and former veterinary surgery of Alf Wight, (alias author James Herriot), The Nag’s Head is an ideal touring base for the magnificent countryside of the Yorkshire Dales, backdrop for television’s version of All Creatures Great and Small.
The Yorkshire Dales, Abbeys and Museums
The area abounds with natural features including Brimham Rocks, Mother Shipton’s Cave and Aysgarth Falls. Ancient sites such as Jervaulx, Rievaulx and Fountains Abbeys are well worth a visit as are the impressive museums of York, Beamish and Bowes.

There are several superb gardens and grand houses in the area. Set in beautiful grounds a few minutes’ drive away, Lightwater Valley leisure park features spectacular white knuckle rides, excitement and entertainment for all ages. We are also located within easty reach of Thorpe Perrow Arboretum, a fabulous Woodland Garden, Bird of Prey & Mammal Centre.
Several nearby towns also boast excellent swimming and sports centre facilities.
